The Coal Shed

Had high hopes for this noted steak and fish resto. Mostly all good. Delicious steak and chips, delicious gnocchi, and delicious petit fours. Holding it back would be the fact that seating is crammed in a bit more than I would like, but on balance excellent.

Verdict: Awesome

La Cave à Fromage

Really more of a fancy cheese shop this, but they hold events. I was taken to a fondue evening and man.  Man.  Incredible, proper melted cheese – some sort of scientific blend for fondue goodness – with piles of interesting bread pieces and a selection of meats. So, so good.

Verdict: Awesome

Moshimo

Stylish Japanese with big sushi conveyor; first tip is make sure to sit at it, as it’s a pain to have to leap up all the time. Food is all good stuff – nice sushi, really nice pork belly side – but you pay over the odds for the nice restaurant!

Verdict: Ok

La Choza

“Mexican street food” is the pitch, and although the “street food” part basically means the food is in plastic baskets, it is highly delicious. Choose a base like quesadila or tacos, your filling, and add various degrees of salsa. Generous portions too, including a calamari starter that is insanely good. Various tequila cocktails also excellent. Only drawback is literally no two seat tables – you’ll be cosy!

Verdict: Awesome

The Ginger Pig

Part of the Ginger Man group, gastropub that I really wanted to love.  Great building, lovely space, amazing appetisers (oysters and fried pig’s head), fantastic service….but our 700g sharing sirloin steak was just pretty damn poor for the money.  Dessert of chocolate ganache also pretty average.

Verdict: Ok

Hen

Cafe/resto type place specialising in chicken. They do brunch as well which looks great, but I had fried chicken and waffles and it was TASTY. Just make sure you want to eat some chicken.  Or some brunch.

Verdict: Awesome

Casalingo

Italian resto; had the best gnocchi of my life here, and my companions also had wonderful pasta – salmon and octopus. Friendly staff, nice wine, great prices – awesome. Even awesome enough to offset their use of Comic Sans in their signage, and that’s saying something.

Verdict: Awesome

Terre a Terre

Award-winning vege resto; was recommended to have the Terre a Verre menu, where you get a taste of lots of dishes, chips, and a carafe of wine per two for £23. All these things are delivered but truth be told I wasn’t that into a lot of the pieces; felt more like raw food, and I normally like vege food.  I feel like I need to go and just have the main I want!

Verdict: Ok
