JB’s American Diner

Like the name says, it’s a diner, and they’re not joking on that front. Huge space with classic red upholstery, booths and miscellaneous Americana. Also huge menu with loads of burgers, hot dogs, the works. And it was really tasty – we’ll be back! Word of warning: the shakes are HUGE (ie a glass, but then another glass and a half in the mixing cup) but they are delicious.

The Eagle

Surprisingly spacious pub tucked away at the far east of North Laine. Not dramatically characterful but lots of seating and nice people, so that’ll do me.

Ephesus

Plain-looking Turkish from the outside, super cosy on the inside. Just good things to say; fig jam with halloumi is delicious it turns out. Went as is apparently known for lamb spare ribs, which were delicious and juicy, but you’d be just as well off having any shish as the meat is wonderfully done. And all at a very reasonable price!

Verdict: Awesome

Muse Cafe 2.0

Specialist in Italian toasties, which is a thing maybe? Anyway, it’s cramped but pleasant, and the owners are delightful, but it’s simply not worth the money.  I enjoyed my ham and cheese toastie, but it wasn’t as good as one would expect from a specialist, and especially not as good as one would expect when being charged £6.20.

Verdict: Ok

The French Horn

What a nice surprise this pub was. Cosy inside, with (at least when we went) a fairly raucous after work drinks crowd, the staff simply can’t be helpful enough.  And the food was just AMAZING.  We both had raclette burgers which rivalled specialists Coggings across the road (two for £12 on Thursdays!), huge plate of onion rings, and raclette garlic bread with huge amounts of garlic. Absolutely top food and seriously good value.

Bincho Yakitori

This place is always booked up, and it’s easy to see why – a cosy, warm space, mostly at the “bar”, serving up a wide range of yakitori, at worst good, at best – stunning.  And doesn’t break the bank either!

Verdict: Awesome
